Our Legacy
Bridgewater Presbyterian Church has a rich history, from our role in the Underground Railroad to being a steadfast presence in the community. We’re proud of our past and committed to serving faithfully in the present and future.
What We Believe
At Bridgewater Presbyterian Church, our beliefs are rooted in the Essential Tenets of the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO). These tenets articulate the core principles of our Reformed faith, emphasizing the sovereignty of God, the authority of Scripture, and the call to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
1. The Authority of Scripture
We believe that the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God, serving as the ultimate authority for faith and life. Every teaching and practice in our church is grounded in Scripture, as we seek to live out its truths faithfully and joyfully.
2. The Triune God
We worship one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This mystery of the Trinity reveals God’s love, power, and purpose in creation, redemption, and the ongoing work of the Spirit in our lives and the world.
3. Salvation in Christ Alone
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully human. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection, He accomplished salvation for all who trust in Him. We proclaim Christ as the only way to reconciliation with God.
4. The Sovereignty of God
God reigns over all creation with wisdom, power, and love. His purposes are being fulfilled throughout history, and we are called to trust Him in every aspect of our lives and ministry.
5. Covenant Relationships
We are created for relationship—with God and with one another. In Christ, we are bound together as a covenant community, called to love, serve, and encourage each other in faith and life.
6. The Call to Holiness
Discipleship is a journey of transformation, as we are continually shaped into the image of Christ. We are called to live lives of holiness, reflecting God’s character in our personal conduct, relationships, and service to others.
7. The Mission of the Church
The church is the body of Christ, commissioned to make disciples of all nations. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are sent into the world to proclaim the gospel, serve those in need, and bear witness to God’s kingdom of justice, love, and peace.
8. The Sacraments
We celebrate two sacraments instituted by Christ: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These visible signs of God’s grace nourish our faith and unite us with believers throughout time and space.
9. Reformed and Always Reforming
As a Reformed congregation, we affirm that God’s truth is unchanging, yet we are continually being reformed by His Word and Spirit. This means staying faithful to Scripture while responding to the needs and challenges of our time.
10. Living in Gratitude
Every aspect of our faith is grounded in God’s grace, and we are called to respond with gratitude in worship, service, and stewardship. We seek to glorify God in all we do, recognizing His goodness and faithfulness in every area of life.
